While every designer has a design process that’s tweaked to their specific way of working, there are some things that are common to us all. Begin with a design brief, brainstorm for initial concepts, present to the client, make revisions. Rinse and repeat.

So many articles on logo design talk about what a logo should include, should be, should do. This discussion takes the opposite approach and talks about the things that it does NOT need to be or do. Sometimes, design is about simplification – in fact, a lot of the time, that’s the case – and this article speaks to that approach and reminds us of that ever-popular phrase – less is more. Amen!

This is an idea that has been a long time coming. With the availability of design software and the proliferation of the Internet, how can you be assured that someone else, somewhere, hasn’t already designed a logo similar to the ones you’re presenting to clients? In steps the Identity Archives Project – a database of logo and identity designs from around the world, searchable by keywords. The site is relatively new, so if you like the idea, pass it along to your designer friends and help grow the database.
